The real life Japan and other world locations that inspired the Pokemon game regions

Did you know that the areas in Pokémon are based on real life locations? This is true for the games as well as for the anime, as both exist in the same universe but are alternate versions of each other, or you could say they play out in different timelines. Of course neither of them follow the real life locations 1 to 1, but still it is pretty cool to know where the inspiration for the Pokémon world came from!

Some of these real life locations have actually acknowledged this, for example there are custom manholes (or Poké Lids) in several locations such as Machida City (Pallet Town) which has the Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle! And Kyoto's Kinkakuji sells goods such as ema with Pikachu and Ho-Oh.

If you'd like to follow along geographically then check out This🗺️Map I made!

Let's now roughly list out what all the different generations and regions are based on.
  • Gen 1 / Kanto (Red/Blue/Green/Yellow) is based on the Kantou region of Japan (Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, Tochigi, Tokyo). With the Sevii Islands from Fire Red and Leaf Green being thought of as part of Kanto due to the similar layout to the islands south of Tokyo. This was later confirmed on the official Pokemon website. [99]
  • Gen 2 / Johto (Gold/Silver/Crystal) is the Kansai region (Hyougo, Kyoto, Mie, Nara, Osaka, Shiga, Wakayama).
  • Gen 3 / Hoenn (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald) is the Kyuushuu region (Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Ooita, Saga).
  • Gen 4 / Sinnoh (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum) is Hokkaido (just Hokkaido).
  • Gen 5 / Unova (Black/White) is New York (both the city and the state).
  • Gen 6 / Kalos (X/Y) is France. With Lumiose City being based on Paris.
  • Gen 7 / Alola (Sun/Moon) is Hawaii.
  • Gen 8 / Galar (Sword/Shield) is  the United Kingdom, with Isle of Armor being based on Isle of Man, and Crown Tundra based on Scotland.
  • Gen 9 / Paldea (Scarlet/Violet) is the Iberian Peninsula, which is Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and Gibraltar. And the land of Kitakami (The Teal Mask expansion) is the Touhoku region of Japan.
  • Almia is a region based on southern Hokkaido that was not featured in the generational Pokémon games but in a Nintendo DS game called Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia.
  • Gen 10 / ??? (Winds/Waves) is south eastern Asia, with Indonesia in particular. There seem to be elements related to Okinawa.

In this blog post I will focus primarily on the Japanese real life inspirations for the games, but many of them are also true for the anime. There are many fan theories but I will go into the locations that were either confirmed or strongly hinted at by the official creators. With that introduction out of the way, let's get started!

Gen 1 @ Kanto

Pallet Town(マサラタウン Masara Town)= Machida City, Tokyo(町田市、東京都)
In an interview, Satoshi Tajiri(田尻 智)talks about growing up in Machida City, a suburb of Tokyo which used to be very rural back in the day but has since then become very urbanized. [1]
With Machida City being the "starting point" of Satoshi and Pallet Town that of the player, Machida has often been thought of as the primary inspiration. This became even more officially hinted at when they installed Poké Lids of the three starter pokémon in Setagaya Park(世田谷公園) which is located in Machida, along with three others. [2]
The primary Pokémon related activity in this area would be to discover the Poké Lids. If you need any help finding them you can find their exact locations over here.
If you are in the area during the summer there is a chance you can participate in the JR Station Pokémon stamp rally, which Machida is also a part of. Keep an eye on this page for updates. (in JP)

Cerulean City(ハナダシテぃ Hanada City)= Tsuchiura, Ibaraki (土浦市、茨城県)
